Independent Institute have begun training in a new location as of January this year – Christies Downs Community Centre.

Certificate II in Food Processing (Sales) FDF20911 – Tailored as an introduction to Café, Sales & Barista is the qualification that is currently offered.

Feedback from students and Job Service Providers has been fantastic! ‘It is great to have a food training facility in the South, we have not had anything to offer students for many years, it is great to be able to provide them with this new opportunity’ said a Job Service provider.

The Christies Downs Community Centre has modern facilities and a friendly atmosphere for all students & staff that utilise the location. Students are also practicing their barista skills by taking regular coffee orders from the volunteer staff. This is great for students to build their confidence and allows them to also practice their customer service skills. All volunteer staff are also very happy with their daily caffeine fix!

The Certificate II in Food Processing (Sales) FDF20911 is a 10 week course offered by Independent Institute. It begins with a 4 week full time practical workshop component where students are required to attend Monday to Friday 9am to 4pm. During this practical workshop, that is held at the Christies Downs Community Centre the following activities are completed in great detail:

  • Hands on café quality product making (sweet & savoury foods)
  • Classroom exercises in food safety
  • Communication and Work health & safety
  • Barista coffee techniques
  • Specialty baking equipment operation
  • Cafe practices and team building.

Not only do we develop a students practical/technical skill in the field, we also increase their confidence and self-esteem to help students to feel ‘job-ready’ when they finish the course. It is a great way for job seekers with little or no experience to get their foot in the door, and a much better understanding of how to apply techniques in an industry based setting.

Following on from the workshop component, students have 6 weeks to complete the other requirements for the qualification including:

  • 3 Individual learning Assignments (Café Style Kitchen Activity, Function for 5o People & Market Trends Activity)
  • Employment Preparation Workbook (CV, Portfolio & Cover Letters, to become ‘job-ready for the food industry)
  • Work & Educational History Profile
  • Work Experience

These additional tasks are designed to make students ‘job-ready’ for the industry and to further their knowledge on all units of competency that are covered in the full time workshop component.

Our next Certificate II in Food Processing (Sales) FDF20911 – Introduction to Café, Sales & Barista starts on Monday the 27th of April 2015 from our Christies Beach location.
