Congratulations to our inaugural Salisbury based Certificate II Food Processing (Sales) “Cafe/Barista” training program graduates. The graduation was held on Friday 5th September, at the new AgriFood Skill Centre at 91 John Street Salisbury!

It has been an intensive and exciting four weeks for the nine graduates which consisting of class room instruction including safe food handling, HACCP, WHS, kitchen relevant numeracy, sustainability, communication and a range of related operational food units. Complementing the theory studies, the bulk of the time was spent in hands-on training in a state of the art modern staff commercial kitchen preparing a range of commercial baker and café products and barista level espresso coffee making.

Certificate II Food Processing (Sales) “Cafe/Barista” training program provided café/bakery job training in a positive workforce development atmosphere that delivers skills and real applied qualifications that will allow our graduates to access developing job opportunities in the food processing sector.

Producing bakery products, light meals and espresso coffee are wonderful mediums to teach kitchen (team based) discipline, product technique, reliability, commitment and food safety responsibility. In creating and decorating quality baked and café products we can provide an environment conducive to developing technical food skills and a positive atmosphere for individual growth and development.

One of the graduates stated that “this program has dragged me out of my depression, taught me a huge range of skills and knowledge and for the first time in years I really want to work. I have exited the program with the confidence and knowledge needed to gain and maintain regular employment within the food industry and beyond”.

Tony Iommazzo the lead trainer for the program commented that “the program aimed to engage participants seeking a career in the local food processing sector by teaching kitchen centric workplace skills, providing hands-on high level baking and café product and espresso coffee making experience to apply skills to and to become a productive member of the community. I think we have made a huge impact with this group”…
