What are Apprenticeships and Traineeships?

No matter what industry you’re in, there is likely to be an Apprenticeship or Traineeship to suit your career!

Australian Apprenticeships cover all apprenticeships and traineeships. They are available in a variety of qualification levels in over 500 occupations across Australia Apprenticeships and traineeships can be full-time, part-time or school-based.

Apprenticeships

The time spent learning a skilled trade under a qualified tradesperson. Apprentices and employers have a legal agreement called a Training Contract

  • Learning is on the job (on-job) under a workplace supervisor, as well as off-job with a training provider like the Independent Institute
  • Generally, the apprenticeship takes three to four years.

Traineeships

The time spent learning under a supervisor.

  • In some instances, training may be completely undertaken in the workplace.
  • After finishing the traineeship, the trainee receives a minimum qualification at a Certificate II or Certificate III level.
  • Generally, the traineeship takes between one and two years.

Important steps to establish your job opportunities

  1. Prepare and Update your Cover Letter and Resume and make direct applications for jobs.  The more commitment, both with experience and pre-employment training, the better your chances of securing a job.
  2. Make contact with Group Training Organisations -The term Group Training may not sound familiar to you, but it’s really quite simple. Group Training is a training and employment arrangement where an organisation, known as a Group Training Organisation (GTO), employs apprentices and trainees and places them with “host employers” until the apprenticeship or traineeship has been completed.   3. Get in touch with Labour Hire Companies, a great way to enter the labour market.   Lots of business’s use Labour Hire companies to service their short-term labour needs.
  4. Make contact with Employment Services Providers who offer different kinds of assistance and services. Visit   https://jobsearch.gov.au/serviceproviders
  5. Register with a Registered Training Organisation like the Independent Institute to undertake training and gather more career advice.
